we are energetic beings: what are your energy givers and takers

written by Jasmine Irven

We are energetic beings. All matter is made up of atoms, with charged particles which vibrate at a certain frequency.

And if all matter is made up of atoms, that means that we are the same on an energetic level as trees, flowers, animals, the ocean and sky, all of nature in all of its beauty.

When we can begin to connect with that vibration, that frequency, we can create drastic change within our lives.

We can learn to shift our energy, and to become an energetic match for the things we wish to bring into our life.

We can feel powerful, and supported, knowing that we are connected to all parts of the universe; that we are an integral part of the system.

That we are whole. Loved. Abundant. Beautiful.

We appreciate nature as it is, without asking it to change. We feel good when we’re in it’s presence, and often our own energetic vibration raises simply by being present with it.

But oftentimes, we lose touch with this perception of ourselves.

We forget that we have this same impact on others in our lives, and on our life in and of itself; our vibration often has a ripple effect.

When we show up fully and completely as ourselves, content with where we’re at, being fully present and conscious in the moment, listening attentively, showing love and respect, practising gratitude, we attract more love, positivity, and abundance into our lives and expand those feelings to others.

And when we show up lower on the energetic scale, sometimes we end up taking away from the energy of others.

Think about times when your energy may have been influenced by those around you: how did it feel?

reflecting on your energy

If we can resolve to be energy givers more of the time than we are takers (knowing we’ll never be perfect and knowing that it’s important to experience the spectrum of emotions in our lives — negative feelings and stress can be powerful indicators of where change may be needed in our life), we can start to attract more abundance and positive energy into our lives.

We can start to become aware of the things that give us energy and those that take it from us.

And we can make shifts in our lives that allow for more energy, light and love to enter our beings.

Reflect on when the last time you felt completely lit up energetically was — the last time your heart felt full, you had a big smile plastered on your face, you felt light and love.

Bring yourself back there now and embody those feelings.

What are the things that give you that kind of energy? That allow you to fill your cup? These might be really small things — feeling grateful for a cup of coffee in the morning, or a glass of cold water on a hot day, or they might be bigger, a beautiful vacation, a relationship you’re grateful for.

Give yourself a few moments to explore and journal on your energy givers. Allow yourself to embrace those feelings, noticing how they land in your body.

energy givers

  • a cup of coffee in the morning (when truly appreciated + sipped slowly)

  • a glass of water

  • sunlight

  • nourishing food

  • exercise

  • the smell of flowers

  • laughter

  • cuddles with a pet

  • self-care

  • reading

  • music

  • fresh air

  • friends + family

  • creativity

  • writing

  • journaling

  • setting intentions

  • sleep

  • meditation

  • visualization

Now reflect on the things that drain your energy. What causes you to feel heavy and maybe unfulfilled? Where and when do you feel fatigue, stress, anxiety? These are your energy takers.

Journal on these as well.

energy takers

  • overthinking

  • screens + social media

  • clutter

  • dehydration

  • an inconsistent sleep pattern

  • going-going-going without rest

  • people pleasing

  • coffee/ alcohol/ inflammatory foods (of course in context these can be energy givers! That’s why this is so individual)

  • setting unrealistic goals

  • unclear + sloppy boundaries

  • negativity

It’s important to recognize that these may look different depending on the context — maybe when you’re feeling creative, clutter is actually a part of your process that drives you forward! Or maybe a glass of wine, chips, and a burger when shared with friends and family or in celebration feels really, really good.

There’s no judgement here and these lists are completely fluid, so give yourself grace!

It’s also important to understand that a lot of life is outside of our control, and so we cannot always filter our lives perfectly to block all of the perceived negativity.

Instead, we need to move with the ebb and flow of life, showing up for ourselves as we are, as best we can. Striving to maintain a connection to feelings of love, support and abundance throughout. When we can, showing up as an energy giver to support others, while also recognizing when we need to lean on others and the universe for this energy and support, and fill our own cup.
