6 ways to spark playfulness and creativity in your life right now
written by Kelisha Brown
With the warm, spring weather upon us, there’s a feeling of refresh and rejuvenation in the air. A longing to expand blooms in our chest, not only for our physical bodies, but for our spiritual and mental bodies as well.
We want to shake off the stagnation of winter, the stiffness from our bones, and the fogginess within our minds. We want to feel renewed.
Over the last year, we’ve had to navigate through multiple social issues that have struck us at the intersections of our identities. The routines and rituals that we used to rely on have begun to lose their luster and effectiveness.
That being said, with the new season upon us, now more than ever is the perfect time to establish new routines and rituals that align with the energy of spring.
Now more than ever, it’s important for us to tap into our creativity and playfulness. Nature has begun to blossom once more, and despite our current circumstances, we should follow in suit.
So, let’s dive into six ways you can spark playfulness and creativity in your life right now.
01 buy an ingredient you’ve never cooked with before
When we go grocery shopping, it’s very easy for us to stick to what we know and only buy what we’re used to cooking. But what if you bought something you weren’t familiar with?
Think of it as a mini culinary adventure. Buy a different kind of vegetable or seasoning and see how you can incorporate it into one of your favourite dishes.
If you’re really up for an adventure, use the new ingredient in a brand-new dish that you’ve never made before! And remember to have lots of fun throughout the experience.
02 take your meditation session outside
Many of us have downloaded one or two apps to begin practising meditation as a means to enhance our well-being.
Consider taking your meditation practice outside, whether that’s at a park in the morning before you start work or the next time you go for a midday walk along a nature trail.
Sitting outside, as you feel the sun rays across your face, will give your meditation practice a whole new dimension of peacefulness.
03 play dress-up with the clothes you already own
Remember when you used to play dress-up with your mom’s clothes? Or your older sibling’s? It’s time to bring that feeling of nostalgia back!
Challenge yourself to create new outfits with the clothes you already have.
Do your best to re-create stylish outfits you like from Pinterest. Wear your favourite cardigan as a stand-alone top. Put on coloured socks with your slippers and sandals. Mix and match different patterns.
Do what you’ve never done before and allow your creativity to run freely. Simply enjoy the idea of dress-up for what it is in this moment: a way to play and have some light-hearted fun!
04 rearrange your living space
Sometimes, all we need to do is change our perspective, and in this instance, it’s about how we see our living spaces.
Imagine for a moment, that you’ve been tasked to redecorate your bedroom or living room differently, with the furniture you already own. What new combinations could you come up with?
Instead of having your couch leaned up against the wall, could you place it in the middle of the room? Or maybe, you can switch your bed’s direction to allow the morning sun to shine upon it? What about swapping your home accessories around in different rooms?
Allow yourself to have some fun by reconsidering where and how your furniture sits within your living space. The possibilities are endless, even if you live in a small home! All you have to do is reframe your perspective!
05 start a journal practice with writing prompts
It can be intimidating to start a journal practice when you feel stuck or overwhelmed. That’s where using a writing prompt can help!
Rather than stare at the blank pages of your journal, do a quick search for a list of journal prompts. Decide what time would work best for you to write, and then commit to answering one of the journal prompts each day. If you’re really in the writing mood, challenge yourself to complete two!
On days that you’re feeling more free-spirited, draw pictures and jot down your ideas in markers. On days that you’re feeling more reflective, consider long-form writing.
Most importantly, allow yourself to express your thoughts and feelings, without any reservations.
06 create a seasonal playlist
Music can truly set the mood and evoke emotion. So, in honour of the new season, why don’t you create a playlist that will inspire you each day?
Add songs that remind you of great memories and bring a smile to your face. Sing aloud to your playlist throughout the day as you work. When upbeat songs come on, use that as a signal for a mini dance break.
If you don’t feel up to creating your own playlist from scratch, there are plenty of playlists on Youtube or Spotify that you could listen to, instead!
However you choose to tap into your creativity and playfulness, do it from a place of joy. Allow yourself to bloom due to your own efforts as you aim to see the sliver of beauty within each day.
