leaning into trust and releasing control
written by Jasmine Irven
With all that's been going on in the world and in my personal life, I've been trying lately to dive more deeply into these times with the intention of trust.
Loosening my grip on the concept of control and the overwhelm we can sometimes feel when we expect things (that are completely out of our control) to go a certain way and then they inevitably don't.
And instead, leaning into the idea of trust: trusting the process, trusting my intuition, trusting that things are happening for a reason.
There are a few levels to this, so I wanted to quickly unpack what that looks like for me.
loosening my grip on the concept of control looks like
knowing that there are always going to be things that are out of my control
And that's okay! I'll instead be taking peace in the knowing that everything in life is impermanent, which is truly what allows for growth. If everything was static there would be no opportunity for improvement, no reason to push for more, no learning.
letting go & moving forward
Though challenging, I’ll be putting my energy into figuring how I can let go and move forward in spite of the fact that the future is unknown. To me this means figuring out what I want my life to look like, what's important to me, and then taking action and putting my energy into those things.
asking questions
Namely, how is "this thing" happening FOR me rather than TO me? So often I’m quick to take the more negative approach to events that feel hard or upsetting. Instead I’ll be working on shifting my mindset to look for the opportunities for learning and growth that inevitably come with periods of hardship.
leaning into trust looks like
practising gratitude
When we are in a state of gratitude we're in a state of abundance. We're raising our frequency. We feel AMAZING and then in turn put ourselves in a position to experience even more of that abundance.
finding ways to unwind
Connecting with nature, long walks listening to music or a great podcast, reading fiction books; intentionally setting aside time to do things that allow me to unwind and relieve stress. Because when we're constantly forcing ourselves forward and not taking the time to slow down, we often lose opportunities to enjoy the present moment.
finding ways to trust my intuition
Giving myself room to think by giving myself space. Enter: long walks, journaling and brain dumping, brainstorming sessions, meditation and visualization - all things that allow me to go inward.
surrendering
In her book You Are a Badass, Jen Sincero talks about this concept that there comes a point where we need to hand the job over to the universe (read all our key tips and takeaways from the book here).
This doesn’t mean we give up or stop taking action, it means we let go energetically, release our grip, and create some space for what we want to come to us. It’s about allowing instead of forcing. It’s about releasing and trusting that if it’s in alignment with our life’s purpose, it will come back to us (or that something or someone even more perfect will come in its place).
final thoughts
If this resonates with you, here are a few affirmations I'll be carrying with me throughout the month that you might also like:
I am open + willing to accept all that is meant for me
The universe is supporting me
I am trusting the timing of my life, and know that what is meant for me will come
And if you need more exploration, more going inwards, try these journaling prompts:
Why or how is ______ happening FOR me rather than TO me? (i.e. COVID-19 is happening for me because it allowed me the chance to slow down and gave me clarity on what's truly important).
What have I learned through this? (i.e. through COVID-19 I've learned I don't need to be doing all the things. I've learned even more the importance and benefit of taking time to relax. Etc.)
What do I have deep gratitude for right now?
How can I further tap into my intuition?
How can I release control and let go of expectations?
How can I lean into trust?
