gift guide for the mind, body, and soul (with a focus on shopping small and sustainable)

written by Jasmine Irven

It’s finally here! Your new and improved gift guide: a (lengthy) list curated with you in mind. A number of beautiful items and companies to support this year, with a focus on the mind, body, soul, and home.

This guide got a ton of attention and appreciation from you last year so we’ve gone in and updated it to ensure all the links are still working, and that the information is still relevant. We’ve also added in a number of new small companies to support!

At Sustainable Bliss we’re all about more conscious consumption. This guide is here not to encourage you to buy a ton of things you don’t need (see blog posts: 5 questions to ask before making a purchase, how to be a more conscious consumer, and the hierarchy of low-waste gift-giving), but to help encourage you to make more intentional decisions both when purchasing for others, and when crafting your own wish-lists. ✨

body

We’re all out here trying to do the best for ourselves: moving our bodies, providing them with nourishment, and pampering our skin. Help make that process a little easier and a little more beautiful with some of these gift ideas. ✨

Even if you don’t end up purchasing something, I would encourage you to show each of the companies/ individuals some love on Instagram! All of the applicable accounts are linked in the product description.

  1. happy workout bands | happyfit | $15.00 (above photo via happyfit)

I love a good workout band, and was recently gifted a set of these happy bands by the founder Emilia! I think we’re all striving to work on ourselves a little bit more every day, and when you can find products that encourage you to move your body, or take part in other activities that nourish your soul, it’s a win-win. Plus, Emilia’s mission is to help more people take control of their mental health through movement so 10% of all sales made on happyfit are donated to the National Alliance of Mental Health (NAMI).

  2. the matcha latte kit | lake and oak tea | $58.00 (above photo via Lake and Oak)

Matcha lattes are super popular nowadays and for good reason! They’re a great alternative to coffee in the mornings to give you a boost of energy without the afternoon crash. Lake and Oak’s Matcha Superfood Latte Blend is made of premium Japanese matcha, which provides a feel-good boost of energy, with the help from adaptogens maca and ashwagandha. While you could get the matcha on it’s own, I think it would be a super cute idea to get the full kit with a cute tea glass and matcha whisk, to set your loved one up for a blissful morning. Plus, Lake & Oak Tea Co. is a Toronto-based company founded by nutritionist Meredith Youngson, and as you know we’re all about supporting local companies and people out here doing good in the world! ✨

  3. starter pack of functional chocolate bars | mid-day squares | $35.48 (above photo via Mid-Day Squares)

I have absolutely fallen in love with the Mid-Day Squares brand since being introduced to them earlier this year. These are some of the best chocolate bars I’ve ever had, with ingredients that will blow your mind. They’re vegan, packed with plant-based protein and fibre, full of superfoods, filling, and did I mention delicious? I’ll say it again: they’re delicious. My fave is the peanut butter bar but I seriously love all of them, and they have a great mixed starter pack if it’s your first time buying. Plus the company is Canadian, based in Montreal, and has an incredible history of resilience and building from the ground up despite larger industry giants trying to tear them down. Just take a look at their IG and you’ll get a feel for why I love the founders and brand so much.

Use the promo code JASMINE15 for 15% off your order!

  4. cork massage balls | scoria | $29.00 (above photo via Scoria)

I got these 100% natural cork massage rollers last year and I LOVE them. They’re so handy to have for those nights when you don’t sleep quite right, or for pre or post-workout to loosen up your body and relieve tension. The cork is sustainably harvested, and comes in a cute reusable carrying bag. Scoria is also a Canadian company and is woman-owned and founded. Plus, every purchase makes an impact! Portion of proceeds empower Indigenous youth through play-based education promoting healthy living and life-skills. Follow Scoria on Instagram here.

  5. all gender kaha low gore-tex running shoe | hoka | $230.00 (above photo via Hoka)

I have heard such great things about Hoka shoes for support while walking and running, so I had to put these on our list! The older I get the more I’m recognizing the importance of actually wearing comfortable and supportive footwear, especially when working out. I won’t bore you with all the specs here but if you’re in the market for a new pair of running shoes, check these out!

    Follow Hoka on IG here.

  6. cacao turmeric latte blend | golde | $29.00 (above photo via Golde)

Golde’s Cacao Turmeric Superfood Latte is a blend of 7 essential superfoods including cacao, turmeric, and coconut to support skin glow, de-bloating, and stress balance. It’s vegan, has no added sugars or sweeteners, and can be enjoyed in water, milk, coffee or smoothies! Plus, Golde is a Black-owned business, meaning you’re supporting BLM when you purchase. Honestly all the Golde products look incredible so although we linked this one, we’d encourage you to check out the rest of their blends and products here.

    Follow Golde on Instagram here.

  7. matching workout and lounge sets | set active | $38.00+ (above photo via SET Active)

I’m obsessed with pretty much every colour combo available on SET Active, and love the set I already have. The colours and products sell out quickly so I’ve just linked their main shopping page for you to browse! All of the sets focus on a balance of comfort + compression; meaning they can take you from your morning workout to an afternoon coffee shop visit.

As a company, SET describes themselves as a community first and a brand second, which is truly nice to see. They work to blur the line between form and function - which if you work out regularly you know is something that’s super important.

    Follow them on Instagram here.

  8. mandy’s salads gourmet cookbook | mandy’s salads | $35.00 (above photo via Mandy’s)

Since moving within a 5 minute walk of a Mandy’s in Montreal, it’s safe to say I’ve spent a fair share of my paycheques here. The restaurants are absolutely beautiful and I’ve loved everything I’ve tried here. So, what better way to support a company and improve your life than by grabbing their cookbook? The book includes recipes for their salads, smoothies, bowls and sweets as well as easy prep steps and essential ingredients. Beyond the practicality, the book is simply beautiful, and you can grab it in both French or English.

    Follow Mandy’s on Instagram here.

  9. compressive workout collection | girlfriend collective | $30+ USD (above photo via Girlfriend)

I love a good compressive workout set, and so all of the mix and match colour and style sets from Girlfriend Collective are right up my alley! Part of the compressive collection fabric is made from recycled water bottles and when you’re finished with the leggings you can recycle them with ReGirlfriend! I love a brand that is beautifully crafted, stylish, and has thought through the entire lifecycle of their products. Truly a sustainable brand I think we all should be supporting!

If you’re gifting this and aren’t sure what colour to grab they also have e-gift cards available. Follow the Girlfriend Collective on Instagram here.

  10. instant mushroom coffee with lion's mane | foursigmatic | $15 USD (above photo via Foursigmatic)

I love my coffee, don’t get me wrong. But at different points throughout the year I like to give my nervous system a little bit of a break by taking 5-10 day coffee breaks. Foursigmatic has become a staple in my routine during those times (and sometimes outside of it too). I know, I know, mushroom coffee doesn’t sound super appealing. But their blends are seriously delicious!

I specifically linked the lion’s mane coffee because it gives a lot of the same energy boost and focus benefits that coffee gives (but in a more sustainable way, with no afternoon crash), but they also have options for defending immunity, getting better sleep, and relaxation. Plants are truly magical and this company is bringing those benefits to us in a more accessible way. Follow Foursigmatic on Instagram here.

  11. cork yoga mat | scoria | $129.00 (above photo via Scoria)

Yes, another Scoria product because I love their brand and mission! This is a 100% natural cork and tree rubber mat which is plant based, sustainably harvested, non-toxic, and comes in plastic-free packaging. As with the massage balls above, every purchase also makes an impact. Portion of proceeds empower Indigenous youth through play-based education promoting healthy living and life-skills.

This is an incredible company doing a lot in the realm of health, wellness, and sustainability, and a gift that just seems to keep on giving. Follow Scoria on Instagram here.

  12. nectar CBD infused facial serum | birch + fog | $59.95 (above photo via Birch + Fog)

“CBD infused serum, when applied topically is clinically shown to have cell-regenerating and anti-inflammatory properties. Loaded with nourishing, wild crafted rose hip oil and organic olive oil, this serum is fully loaded and best of all smells phenomenal.”

I’ve been loving everything I’ve been seeing about CBD products being used in the wellness space lately, so I’m excited to see a Canadian based company providing high-quality oils like this! Follow Birch + Fog on Instagram here.

  13. cacao mylk | lake and oak tea | $18.00 (above photo via Lake and Oak)

Healthy hot chocolate anyone? This superfood hot cocoa is “inspired by cozy nights in, plush blankets and rose-scented bubble baths,” and is full of adaptogens and raw cacao power. Chaga mushroom, maca and cacao can help boost mood and energy, improve the body’s ability to manage stress, and promote a glow from within. <3 Plus the blend is 100% organic, and nutritionist formulated by Canadian Meredith Youngson. ✨

  14. natural skincare oils + creams | wildcraft| $10.00 + (above photo via @vicfilippini on Instagram)

I’ve been gifted and have purchased a few different skincare products from Wildcraft this year after discovering their brand and I am seriously impressed every time!! From their natural deodorant, to essential oil infused moisturizer and body scrubs, everything smells delicious, is incredibly effective, reasonably priced and beautifully designed.

Plus, there’s a lot to love about their mission and story. They’re a woman-founded, Toronto company, with an eco commitment to reduce their waste and impact as much as possible. 1% of sales are donated towards environmental causes, many of their products come in glass or aluminum packaging which can be properly recycled (plus they have additional low waste options), and of course their products are handmade in small batches and simply designed with fresh and organic ingredients.

Get 15% off when you shop through our link.

    Follow Wildcraft on Instagram here.

  15. compression socks | comrad socks | $21.00+ (above photo via Comrad Socks)

These socks are seriously fun, with some serious health benefits as well. I have a few of the ankle socks and absolutely love them! They’re magically thin and made of breathable fibers that contour to your leg, providing comfortable compression to support your wellbeing.

If you’re often sitting for long periods (hello to almost all of us desk-workers), blood and fluid can pool in the lower legs and feet, leading to swelling and even potentially blood clots. Compression socks work their magic by gently squeezing the legs to increase blood flow from your legs and feet back towards your heart. Once the blood starts to move, swelling subsides and you’ll lower the risk of developing blood clots. Plus, they’re just ridiculously comfy.

Follow Comrad Socks on Instagram here.

mind

Your mental wellbeing shouldn’t come secondary. You know yourself best - what makes you feel great?! Those are the things you should invest (intentionally) in.

Or, if purchasing for someone else, with these gift ideas you can subtly encourage them to take their self-care a little more seriously - because you know they deserve it!

These gifts are focused on concepts like clearing your mind, reducing stress, relieving mental clutter, and learning.

Even if you don’t end up purchasing something, I would encourage you to show each of the companies/ individuals some love on Instagram! All of the applicable accounts are linked in the product description.

  2. 101 essays that will change the way you think by Brianna Wiest | Indigo | $21.00 (above photo via Indigo)

I absolutely love this book and pretty much everything else Brianna Wiest writes. This is a beautiful book for learning, pondering, practicing self-love, exploring oneself and your beliefs and values, and allowing you time to slow down.

    Follow Brianna on Instagram here.

  3. aroma om® white diffuser | saje | $98.00 (above photo via Saje)

“Enhance your well being and create a soothing atmosphere by bringing the power of 100% natural essential oils into your home.” Ummm yes please. This is the exact diffuser I’ve had for a couple years now and I absolutely love it.

It’s minimal, blends seamlessly into my room decor, and I love the simplicity of the system. You just add some water and a couple drops of your fave essential oil blend (mine is this grounding yoga blend made with patchouli, orange, and neroli) and you’re good to go.

    Follow Saje on Instagram here.

  4. lavender essential oil incense | province apothecary | $16.00 (above photo via Province Apothecary)

I use this incense to reduce stress and ground me for my meditation sessions and other events and it’s pretty much become essential to my practise now. The Province Apothecary incense is also always free from synthetic fragrances and chemicals, which is super important specifically with products you’re inhaling to some extent.

While the lavender is their calming and relaxing incense (aka why I love it), they also have a number of other incense options to suit your needs. Check them out here. And p.s. if you grab someone incense, be sure to also grab them an incense holder like this one if they don’t already have one (I’ve linked the one I have and love).

Follow Province Apothecary on Instagram here.

  5. essential well being | by sara panton / indigo | $29.95 (above photo via Indigo)

This is the perfect coffee table book, yes, but is also a great foundational book filled with knowledge of botanicals and wellness practices to help you live more naturally and “elevate the simple moments of your day,” — ummmm does that sound like our mission or what?! The book contains more than 100 DIY essential oil recipes, rituals, and suggestions, most of which take less than 15 minutes. Grab your copy here, or support your local bookstore by picking up a copy there.

  6. five-minute journal | intelligent change | $38.00 (above photo via Intelligent Change)

Journaling has become a pretty consistent practise in my life, whether that’s with morning pages, gratitude journaling, or using journal prompts. I find it the perfect way to gain clarity and clear my mind. The five-minute journal is based on positive psychology research, and practices of gratitude. It’s the perfect way to gift someone a little bit more happiness, calm & appreciation in their life.

  8. 30-day challenge tracker | vanaboard | eur $29.00 (above photo via Vanaboard)

We talk all about the power of simple, sustainable changes here at Sustainable Bliss and this is the perfect tool to make those changes happen! Consistency is one of the biggest reasons our goals don’t accomplished — we’re good at sticking with things for a few days but when we don’t see results we often stop before the real magic happens.

The 30-day tracker helps give you the visual you need to keep working on your goal without hitting that stopping point. It will help you to stay accountable and honest, while keeping you motivated along the way! Plus, it’s super cute.

    Follow Vanaboard on Instagram here.

  9. daily self-care checklist by bare creative studio | $7.10 (above photo via Bare Creative Studio)

This print is based on the concept that planning our your daily tasks should be fun and effortless, which we love, and also the concept that keeping track of your sleep patterns, health and other self-care practices should be too!

There’s something super satisfying about checking things off of a physical piece of paper, and moving through this checklist each day will allow you to declutter your mind.

Plus, because this is a digital download, you can easily print the item at home, whenever you need that motivation or simply a place to write your tasks!

soul

Nourishing your soul to me means finding ways to feel completely cozy and at peace. I hope these products and companies encourage you to love yourself, and to create a space that you can relax in.

Are all of these things “necessary”? Of course not. But, your happiness is. And if you gain a little mood boost when you sip your morning coffee while wearing beautiful loungewear with a candle lit in the background — then that’s what you should do. ;)

Even if you don’t end up purchasing something, I would encourage you to show each of the companies/ individuals some love on Instagram! All of the applicable accounts are linked in the product description.

  1. round meditation cushion + zabuton | halfmoon | $180.00+ (above photo via Halfmoon)

I have had my Halfmoon cushions for over a year and a half now and I am still seriously in love with them. If you’ve ever attended one of our meditation sessions it’s what I was sitting on! They’re beautifully designed in Canada, are super comfortable, and have beautiful energy and intention poured into each one.

As their site says, “The wisdom of our experience and the energy of the West Coast are woven into everything we create. Even more importantly, our respect for traditional yogic values—namely truth, compassion, community, and kindness—guides us on our path.”

Sustainably crafted in Portugal, Fable’s stoneware is hand-finished to be organic in shape, one of a kind, and durable enough for everyday use. 7. hazel brew fall candle | nautana | $24.00 (above photo via Nautana)

Another candle because I am in love with the sound of this scent, and company: “Sitting cozy by the fireplace with a perfectly warm cup of Hazelnut Brewed Coffee. The duo of these sweet fragrances will fill your space with tenderness and good intents. A perfect morning starter.” The candle burns for up to 70 hours and is made of a wax base of coconut and soy.

I’ve actually tried the Bliss candle as well and absolutely loved it! I just included the Hazel Brew because it’s more of a wintery scent.

Nautana is a Black-owned environmental wellness brand centralized on self-care, whose “mission is to provide others the resources to allow them to reconnect with themselves through a holistic approach.” Love it. Check out all their products here, and follow Nautana on Instagram here.

experiences

Package free and oh so meaningful. Experiences offer a prolonged feeling of joy for the receiver & give your loved one memories I’m sure they won’t forget for years to come.

Here are some ideas for inspiration!

  • spa package

  • nail appointment

  • holistic facial

  • massage

  • reiki session

  • meditation class or membership (not us shamelessly promoting our own self-care club)

  • yoga or gym membership

  • concert ticket (assuming you know their taste in music)

  • vacation (this doesn’t have to be anything crazy! An airbnb or cabin booking for a weekend away in a secluded area sounds perfect to me! Of course, being mindful of COVID restrictions, and staying safe!)

classes or courses

Give the gift of learning something new! Especially if you know your loved one has been eyeing a program, class, or course, but is hesitant about investing in themselves, this is the perfect option to show them they’re worth it. Consider looking into:

subscription

Help them save on their monthly bills. ✨ Being an adult is oh so expensive.

alternatives

A few other ideas that didn’t fit into the other categories but are great gifts all the same!

  • a charity donation in the person’s name (to organizations like Black Lives Matter, The Bail Project, or the Loveland Foundation)

  • gift cards or e-gift cards if you can (for coffee, groceries, or their fave restaurant)

  • consumables like bulk popcorn, wine, bulk coffee, etc.

If you’ve made it this far — thank you! This guide takes a lot of time and energy so I truly hope it is helpful and inspirational!

I also need to say that there are SOOOO many other brands, creators, and beautifully curated products I could have included on this gift guide. So please, browse Instagram for those local to you, window shop in your area, and do your own research to find people, brands, and products that absolutely speak to you. That’s truly what it means (in my mind at least) to be intentional.

My goal is of course to encourage you to reduce unnecessary purchases when you can (see blog posts: 5 questions to ask before making a purchase, how to be a more conscious consumer, and the hierarchy of low-waste gift-giving), but when you are looking to make a purchase I think it’s important to do so consciously and intentionally in support of brands and people you love & trust.

Every purchase you make has the power to make a difference, so make it a positive one.✨

P.s. I’d love for you to continue the conversation in the comments by letting us know what you’ll be gifting this year!
