how to use essential oils in the shower

written by Jasmine Irven

I’m all about simple ways to up-level your daily experience, because I truly believe that health and wellness should not be complicated!

You don’t need a 15-step self-care routine to really step into bliss. It’s about looking at the small things you can add to your day-to-day which will allow you to unwind, relax, and feel genuinely loved.

One of my more recent discoveries on a way to enhance my shower routine involves the use of essential oils. I think it’s pretty common to hear of essential oil baths, but if you don’t have time to draw a bath and/or are looking to save some water, I’d definitely recommend using this guide.

This is the perfect way to begin using aromatherapy, and to begin experimenting with different essential oil blends and uses.

p.s. add this to your ideal night routine to really upgrade your level of self-care.

how to

1. pick your oil

Make your choice based on the feelings you’d like to evoke in the shower – each essential oil has its own therapeutic compounds, with certain scents causing people to experience different emotions. If you’re looking for something relaxing or to help you unwind before bed, opt for a soothing oil like chamomile, lavender, or ylang ylang.

  • If you’re looking for more of an uplifting or stimulating oil to help you wake up and become energized for the day ahead, try citrus oils like grapefruit, orange, and lemon, or other more warming scents like cinnamon and basil.

  • If you’re experiencing physical or mental pain, or are looking for an immune booster, consider bergamot oil, clove oil, or peppermint oil (specifically for nausea or headaches).

  • For general cleansing, try eucalyptus (cleanse from toxins) or frankincense (strengthens + stabilizes).

2. grab a washcloth

Dampen it with hot water.

3. run the shower water

Get your shower water running at a warm + comfortable temperature.

4. add the essential oil

Add 15-20 drops of your chosen essential oil to the washcloth. If you’re feeling inspired try mixing a couple! My go-to combination lately has been peppermint and lavender for mood support and breath work.

5. place the washcloth just outside the full water stream

Get in the shower and place the washcloth just outside of the full water stream.

You want the steam and heat of the shower (and maybe a little water) to reach it but if it’s getting soaked the essential oils are going to be removed more quickly than desired.

6. complete your shower as you normally would

Consider giving yourself a head massage as you use your shampoo, and finishing off your bath with a nice sugar scrub.

Up-level even more by using coconut oil after as a moisturizer (10/10 would recommend)!
